California Scrub Co. + The Skin Loving Properties of Coffee

You know it, you love it, you’ve probably even read about some of the benefits of putting it on your skin. If, however,  you’ve managed to remain unaware of its magical properties because you live under a rock, crawl out, open your peepers, and take this all in.

  • Caffeine, in addition to picking you up when you’re down, is a natural antioxidant. This means it packs a whopping cancer-fighting punch directly to your skin, fighting free-radicals and damage that reflect as age spots and wrinkles. Caffeine is also a vasodilator, constricting blood vessels which firms skin and aids in improved skin texture.
BONUS! Dark circles under your eyes? It will help diminish the appearance of those, too.
  • This one is really obvious, but exfoliation. As a mechanical exfoliant (opposed to a chemical one), coffee will improve circulation, remove residual dirt and dead skin, and allow you to absorb more moisture. You can also expect the general act of exfoliating to help release toxins and speed up healing, yay!
  • Aromatherapy. A happy little perk of coffee is the smell. It’s been noted to help clear the mind, combat depression, and rid feelings of nausea. So breathe deeply, savor it, and know that it’s not just working on the outside.Processed with VSCO with 6 preset

But if you’re still not sold on slathering what was once a morning cup ‘o Joe on your precious epidermis, allow me to direct you to California Scrub Co.
My latest obsession, Cali Scrubs, hits all the notes I’m looking for in, well, everything.
Not only are their scrubs organic and upcycled, they’re sustanably made in small batches in sunny, quirky Venice, CA.
Let’s run through that again.
They “upcycle [their] coffee grounds, creating less waste, use glass jars to encourage the “reduce, reuse, recycle” mindset, and use 100% recycled paper for all of [their] labels and materials”. They’re in the business of making “truly organic products with simple ingredients from Mama Earth”.
They’re also working to Beat The Microbead, which, if you don’t already know, is basically really bad.

Infused with essential oil combos like lavender and ylang-ylang (PSA: pronounced like eee-long eee-long), cinnamon, vanilla, and clove, and vetiver, cedarwood, and clove, there’s something for everyone. Each scent is marinated in jojoba oil, a liquid wax extracted from the nuts of a bush that grows in the southwest, and an oil that’s the closest resemblance to human sebum (that’s a gross word).
This should excite you, no matter who you are.
Dry skin? Jojoba oil will act as the lubrication your skin isn’t making enough of, moisturizing and banishing any tightness or flakiness. But you have oily skin, you say? Don’t stress. Jojoba’s got you. It’s been proven to curb excessive oiliness and stop many of the associated issues (oily hair, shininess, blemishes). Not to mention it’s the Cadillac of deep cleaners, penetrating deep into your pores with its antibacterial properties, leaving you soft, toned, and acne free, yippee.
Basically, why are you not rubbing coffee and jojoba oil head to toe right now as you’re reading this?

Bohemian Daydream

Well hot damn, Pennsylvania sure is muggy. (Also, I moved to Pennsylvania.)
You don’t even want to get me started on how much I’m not acclimating to the humidity.
In addition to about half of our windows being unable to open, we didn’t have air conditioning in our very old, very poorly insulated apartment until just recently. So, for the past few months I’ve essentially just been a big, lazy puddle – scantily clad and complaining about how hot it is every five minutes.
Cue the bodysuit.

Green Goddess

Nope. Not the delicious salad dressing, ya silly. More what I was feeling like in this long sleeved maxi from Knot Sisters.
Alas, if only I could have this dress in a million variations.
It’s long and it’s flowy in the best of ways. It also has as a great plunging neckline (perfect for my fellow IBTC members), and is basically the comfiest thing I’ve had draped across my bod.

The leather goods of VOZ Collective | Yellow Wallpaper HM

Before I get into how magical this shoot was, let me tell you that this guy right here, Mark, my other half, reeeeeally isn’t the biggest fan of being photographed. He’s a cinematographer and spends most of his time around cameras or reading about cameras or looking at pictures of cameras or talking about cameras, but I assure you he will never be the first person to volunteer to be in front of one. That being said, he was a bonafide gangster for this shoot with Voz Collective x Yellow Wallpaper HM.

Retro Shift Dress |Art Deco Poncho

A few months ago I was a part of a photography workshop. It was held in this incredible Victorian home, tucked away innocently in a really urban neighborhood. I walk in the door and there’s this rack of killer wardrobe curated by LA based Recycle 2 Riches. It’s got some mod, some modern, and a smattering of other really cute pieces from the eras in between. Alright, I’m feelin’ this.

Hey, what’s up? | Fall Boho with Livin’ Freely and RICA Boutique

Well. It’s been like a year since I’ve paid attention to this. I really regret that.
So much has happened over the past several months. A handful of films, some great trips, and the little baby plunge into my fledgling, part-time modeling career. I’ve been so fortunate to have been a part of oodles of really great shoots with super talented creatives and some very cool brands. I don’t often share more than one or two shots from any given shoot on social media, and that’s a shame. A damn shame, I tell you! So, in efforts to bring myself up to speed, I’ll be sharing a lot of my past images along with more recent ones. This is the first set from a lookbook shot a week or two ago for Livin’ Freely | Rica Boutique, and is part of a larger Glamping inspired lookbook by the cool kids over at B.Rose. I truly loved shooting this.

So without further ado, here are some words about it all.

platform party

And I’m home.
It took a minute, but I’m finally settling back in. I can’t even begin to describe how amazing it is to be back in some mother lovin’ heat. All I want to do is wear tiny, little flowy things and lie in the sun. And it’s that exact notion that inspired this most recent number.
While gone, I had a hole in my heart the size of these thrifted boots, so as soon as I was back I could barely wait to slip my feet into these little guys. A floral maxi and a deconstructed vintage tee play on the rad, retro party that these beautiful platforms are, while a wide brim fedora makes me feel super cool and mysterious.
